No incidence should be used to prove if god exists or not
I recently went through a forum where an atheist shared his experience of an accident. The person and his wife had met with a car accident. Her wife was seriously injured and admitted to the hospital. Doctors had already informed him that her wife had a very little chance of survival before taking her to Operation Theater. He was so terrified and nervous that for a second he thought if there could be a God who could save her life.
Ultimately, her wife had a successful operation and she was saved. The incident cannot be used to prove whether God exists or not, as a matter of fact, the person still remains an atheist. Verily; doctors were God for him. The incident is not the agenda of the discourse but the contention that atheism is not a religion.
Logically, atheism is a faith and thus a religion!
By definition, atheists are people who are not theists. And, theists are the people who have faith in some sort of God or Gods. For example, Christianity believes Jesus is the ‘son of God’. Muslims believe; ‘Allah is only true God worthy of worship’. Hindus believe that there is one true God, the supreme spirit, called ‘Brahman’. Contrary to this atheist believe that there is no God. Hence, the underlying concept which defines them (including Atheist) is a belief – A Faith. An atheist holds a faith that there is no God and a theist holds a faith that there exists a God. Thus faith defines all of them.
Today, it is generally accepted that atheism is opposite of religion. But, if we describe them using the word: faith, then the difference between them vanishes. It becomes evident that both groups of people are trying to defend their faiths. One with a faith that no God exists and other with a faith that God exists. Since religion is a matter of faith and atheist too hold a specific faith, an atheist cannot be considered outside the ambit of a religion. Logically, atheism is a faith and thus a religion.
Agnostics can logically be considered as neutral
There is another group of people who take a ‘golden middle’ path and are called agnostics. Agnostics are those who are not sure whether there exists a God or not. Hence, it can be said that there are mainly two types of people on the planet: believers (atheists + theists) and non-believers (agnostics). The theists can be further categorized into monotheist and polytheist. Monotheism can further be attributed to Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. And, polytheism can be attributed to Buddhism, Hinduism, and Shinto. Hence, if we define people based on faith in God one can define them as below:
Some people believe there is no one worthy of worship (Atheist), some believe that there is only one God worthy of worship (Islam), some believe in Trinity, “There is One God, who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit” (Christianity) and some believe there are many deities worthy of worship (Hinduism). Atheism is actually sitting at the root of faith (religion) pyramid!
Why the God still holds relevance for the theist?
[#1] Men created the ‘God’.
Philosopher Ludwig Feuerbach and psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud have argued that God and other religious beliefs are human inventions, created to fulfill various psychological and emotional wants or needs.
Had this been the case, these Gods should have always been solacing the people. God shouldn’t have warned about doomsday which the people fear. He shouldn’t have told people about the hell and should have told about the heaven only. He should not have taught moral values which have been against ‘free will’ of human evolution. All these seems inconsistent with how a God should behave assuming that He was created by humans.
[#2] Religion is against the science.
Atheists are also of the opinion that when the early men were not able to understand how the rain happens and thunder strikes, how the sun sets & rises and how the weather changes; they created the concept of God. This supposed ‘God’ was behind these phenomena.
But people now have more such questions and do not hook-up their answers to God. Had our ancestors attached every answer to such questions to God, science would not have in the stage it is today. In fact, many verses in Holy Scriptures command mankind to study nature, and this means an encouragement for scientific inquiry.
[#3] Universe came into existence of its own.
Atheist further believes that “matter is self-existing and not created”. This statement is put forth to counter the last line of defense of theists where they tries to hold their faith in God by saying, “a matter cannot be created by itself ”.
If the matter had a beginning and yet was not created, one must logically maintain that without any force, energy or intelligence, the matter should not come into existence. But ‘Big Bang’ states that Singularity always existed. This fact should be enough to sway the answer to, “Does God exist?” into the positive. So, how can be a man at fault if he has a faith in the existence of a God?
Hence, man didn’t create the concept of God because of fear or ignorance. Else, by the time civilization reached industrial revolution via advancement in science during Islamic golden period and European renaissance, ‘God’ would have vanished.
Are religious people cause of conflict and war?
It has been widely propagated idea that theism divided people, and is the cause of conflict and war. But if one analyzes the history (not too far) it tells us an entirely different story.
During 1936-1938, Joseph Stalin led The Great Purge in the Soviet Union and killed an estimated 600,000 people. Hitler and the Nazi regime were also responsible for the killing of an estimated 19.3 million civilians and prisoners of war during World War 2. Mussolini led the Ethiopian war between 1936 and 1941. During this war; the Italians killed hundreds of thousands of Ethiopian civilians. Mao Zedong’s regime was responsible for the extinction of people anywhere from 40 to 70 million. Ironically, all these tyrants proclaimed no faith in any religion!
And, yet they say, “Religion divides people, and is a cause of conflict and war”. Gauging back in history you won’t find any theist person who would have been responsible for so much death and destruction.
In fact, religions teach compassion and morality
Bible says, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself” – Luke 10:27.
Qur’an says, “Whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land – it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one – it is as if he had saved mankind entirely” – sūrat l-māidah 5:32.
Maha Upanishad says, “One is a relative, the other stranger, say the small minded. The entire world is a family, live the magnanimous.” – Maha Upanishad 6.71–75.
Had the ‘God’ been created by a person or a group of people then the human conceptualized god should have asked one group to demean people of another. Contrary to this, it teaches compassion and morality. Teachings; even atheist agrees with.
Absence of a tool to prove something does not disprove its existence
Mathematically, it can be proven that tossing a coin has 50% probability of getting a head or a tail every time the coin is tossed. But, logically this is also possible that a person tosses a coin and it always end up head or a tail infinite number of times. And, there is no tool to prove it otherwise. Therefore, an absence of a tool to prove something does not disprove its existence. Same is the case with people trying to prove or disprove the existence of God.
